Hamas leader phones Turkish president on Jerusalem

U.S. media says Trump planning to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital

By Nour Abu Aisha

GAZA CITY, Palestine (AA) – Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh phoned Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday to discuss U.S. plans to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

During the phone call, Haniyeh warned of grave repercussions of the U.S. decision, according to a statement released by Hamas.

The statement quoted Erdogan as saying during the contact that "he shows a great interest in Jerusalem and is keen on playing an active role for the city".

According to the statement, the Turkish leader said he would call for an Islamic summit to discuss the issue and would call U.S. President Donald Trump to discourage him against the move.

There was no official statement released by Turkish authorities about the phone call.

U.S. media said last week that Trump was planning to relocate the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and recognize the city as Israel’s capital.
