MOSCOW (AA) - The intense rainfall that hit the Moscow region and disrupted daily life was the second-heaviest in the world in terms of precipitation, according to Russia’s Hydrometeorological Center (Hydrometcentre) on Tuesday.
Meteorological data showed that 82 millimeters of rain fell in the Balchug district in the capital Moscow, and similar levels were recorded in the Moscow region's cities of Kolomna, with 76 millimeters and Tushino with 75 millimeters of rain.
Meteorologists noted that in terms of intensity, the Moscow downpour was surpassed only by tropical rains in Southeast Asia, where daily precipitation ranged from 86 to 200 millimeters. These extreme rainfall amounts caused localized flooding and temporary disruptions to urban infrastructure.
