Hillary Clinton recovering from pneumonia, says doctor

NEW YORK (AA) – Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was diagnosed with pneumonia and is in recovery, her personal doctor said Sunday.

The former Secretary of State "has been experiencing a cough related to allergies. On Friday, during a follow up evaluation of her prolonged cough, she was diagnosed with pneumonia", Dr. Lisa Bardack said in a written statement.

Clinton was forced to leave a 9/11 memorial service at ground zero Sunday morning after feeling "overheated", the Democratic nominee said.

Dr. Bardack said the former New York senator felt unwell during the ceremony because of her condition as well as dehydration.

"I have just examined her and she is now re-hydrated and recovering nicely," Bardack added.

A video posted on Twitter appeared to show the 68-year-old struggling to stand and being helped into a waiting vehicle.

Clinton left the ceremony to rest at her daughter Chelsea's apartment in lower Manhattan, according to a statement by Nick Merrill, her press secretary, who said later that she was "feeling much better".

As she exited the apartment building to return home in Chappaqua, New York, just north of New York City, Clinton told reporters: "I'm feeling great, it's a beautiful day in New York.”

Concerns about Clinton’s health have been raised by her Republican rival Donald Trump who has cited a concussion in 2012 that required hospitalization. Trump and his aides have also said Clinton has appeared ill and tired while campaigning.

Bardack released a statement in July 2015 that said beyond taking blood thinners, Clinton is in “excellent” health.

Trump faced criticism of his own after his personal physician of 35 years, Harold Bornstein, announced late last year in a four-paragraph letter that the candidate’s health was “astonishingly excellent” and he would become the healthiest president ever elected. The only medical information released by the Republican campaign was written in five minutes, according to the doctor, while a limousine sent by Trump waited outside Bornstein’s Manhattan office.
