LONDON (AA) - Hollywood stars wore blue ribbons at the British Academy Film Awards to show solidarity and support for refugees and people displaced by conflict and disasters such as the recent earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.

The show of support came on a call by the UN refugee agency UNHCR.

Cate Blanchett, Michelle Yeoh, and Jamie Lee Curtis were just some of the A-listers who were spotted with blue ribbons at the awards ceremony, known as the BAFTAs.

Talking about why she wore the ribbon, Curtis told the PA news agency: “My friend Cate Blanchett is asking people to remind us all in the midst of all the season of shiny things that, of course, there are terrible refugee crises going on all over the world, everywhere all at once, and we need to do our part.”

More than 41,100 people have been killed in Türkiye after two powerful earthquakes rocked the country’s southern regions on Feb. 6, according to the latest official figures.

The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 quakes were centered in Kahramanmaras and affected 10 more provinces – Hatay, Gaziantep, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Kilis, Osmaniye, and Elazig.

In neighboring Syria, the deadly tremors have claimed at least 5,840 lives.
