Hundreds of PKK bunkers destroyed in Turkey

ANKARA (AA) - More than 1,100 PKK bunkers have been destroyed by Turkish security forces in the last eight months, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday.

In a statement, the ministry said the bunkers, which are often used for storing weapons, ammunition and other supplies as well as providing shelter for terrorists, were found and demolished across 23 of Turkey’s 81 provinces.

The 1,127 bunkers destroyed between Sept. 1 and May 8 compared with 540 destroyed in the same period a year earlier.

The vast majority were destroyed in the Southeastern and Eastern Anatolia regions but others were also found and destroyed in the Black Sea region and even Izmir province in the west.

The PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU, has been responsible for more than 1,200 deaths since July 2015, when it resumed its armed campaign.
