Hurricane Beryl threatens southern US coasts
Hurricane-force winds, flash, urban flooding, rip currents expected in Texas coast
By Yasin Gungor
ISTANBUL (AA) - The US National Hurricane Center issued a warning on Monday about the life-threatening storm Beryl along the coast of the southern state of Texas.
The forecast from the center predicted that Beryl would bring damaging hurricane-force winds early Monday, affecting areas from Baffin Bay to San Luis Pass along the Texas coast.
Residents were advised to comply with local evacuation orders.
Authorities are expecting significant flash and urban flooding in the region, spanning across parts of the middle and upper Texas Gulf Coast and eastern Texas. They also foresee minor to isolated major river flooding.
The center alerted that rip currents will generate hazardous beach conditions through Monday along a large portion of the Gulf Coast. A rip current is a strong, narrow channel of fast-moving water that moves away from the shore, slicing through the lines of breaking waves.
Previously, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs disclosed that Hurricane Beryl had impacted over 260,000 individuals in the Caribbean.
