Iceland PM quits after humiliating election defeat
Progressive Party wins just 8 of 63 seats in parliament
By Ahmet Gurhan Kartal
LONDON (AA) – Iceland’s Prime Minister Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson resigned Sunday after his Progressive Party suffered a crushing loss in the general election.
The Progressive Party won just 8 of the 63 seats in parliament while its coalition partner, The Independence Party, received enough votes to secure 21 seats.
The elections held Saturday were called after the resignation of previous Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, which followed public outcry and protests after it was discovered he had personal offshore holdings.
Meanwhile, The Lef-Green Movement and The Pirate Party each won 10 seats.
Information regarding offshore holdings of numerous politicians across the world were revealed in the Panama Papers leak.
Johansson will remain in office until a new government is formed.
