India conducts vertical launch short-range surface-to-air missile test flights

NEW DELHI (AA) – India successfully tested the vertical launch short-range surface-to-air missile from an integrated test range in the eastern coast state of Odisha on Tuesday, according to an official statement issued by the Ministry of Defense.

Two test flights of the Very Short Range Air Defense System (VSHORADS) missile from a ground-based portable launcher were conducted at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, said the statement.

VSHORADS is an indigenously designed and developed Man Portable Air Defense System (MANPAD) by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

“VSHORADS missile incorporates many novel technologies including miniaturized Reaction Control System (RCS) and integrated avionics, which have been successfully proven during the tests,” the statement said.

The missile, designed to counter low-altitude aerial threats at short ranges, is propelled by a dual thrust solid motor, it said.

“The design of the missile, including (the) launcher, has been highly optimized to ensure easy portability. Both the flight tests have completely met the mission objectives,” it added.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh appreciated the efforts of DRDO and industry partners, saying this new missile equipped with modern technologies will provide the armed forces with a technological boost.
