India's Modi joins crowd at UN for International Day of Yoga

Premier conveys message of unity but he is criticized for human rights record at home, including marginalizing Muslim minorities

UNITED NATIONS (AA) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined a big crowd Wednesday at UN headquarters, which included ambassadors, diplomats and UN staff for International Day of Yoga.

"Yoga means to unite,'' Modi said as he performed yoga along with the crowd on the north lawn of the facility in New York.

''Yoga is unifying. It is for everyone: for all ethnicities, for all faiths and for all cultures,'' he said.

But as Modi conveyed a message of unity, he is being criticized for his human rights record in India, including marginalizing Muslim minorities.

June 21 was declared International Day of Yoga, a global event Modi lobbied to celebrate in 2014.

Among the attendees were New York City Mayor Eric Adams, UN General Assembly President Csaba Korosi and UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.
