Indonesia raises alert to highest level as Mount Ibu erupts

Evacuation points set up in case people are displaced, says National Disaster Management Agency

ISTANBUL (AA) - Indonesia on Wednesday raised the alert to the highest level soon after Volcano Ibu erupted.

Eruption of the mountain, located on Halmahera Island, created a four-kilometer (2.5 mile) column of smoke above the peak, said the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency.

The eruption was recorded to be over two minutes, according to the agency.

The agency said temporary evacuation points have been set up and they are ready to evacuate residents if necessary.

The public was warned by the authorities not to approach the four-kilometer (2.4-mile) radius of the mountain and a sectoral expansion of six kilometers (3.7 miles) towards the crater.

Indonesia, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences the highest level of seismic activity and volcanic eruptions globally, with over 120 active volcanoes.
