ISTANBUL (AA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Saturday offered mediation to "restore a conducive security situation" after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran.
The Indonesian government, specifically Prabawo, "expressed its readiness to facilitate dialogue to restore a conducive security situation," the Southeast Asian nation's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
If both parties agree, it added, Parabow "is willing" to travel to Tehran to mediate.
"Elevated tensions in the Middle East have the potential to disrupt regional stability and global peace and security," the statement said.
Jakarta called on all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue and diplomacy.
It also reiterated the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and resolving differences through peaceful means.
As explosions rocked Tehran and Israel announced "preemptive" strikes against Iran, US President Donald Trump also confirmed launching "major combat operations" in Iran.
Tehran accused the US and Israel of military aggression, calling the strikes a violation of its sovereignty and a breach of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter.
Stressing the right to self-defense under the UN Charter, Iran said it had prioritized diplomacy to prevent war but “the time has now come to defend the homeland,” and that the armed forces would respond in a “decisive and powerful manner.”
