BAGHDAD (AA) - Iraqi warplanes on Tuesday struck several positions held by the Daesh terrorist group in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zour province, according to the Iraqi Defense Ministry.

In a statement, the ministry's Joint Operations Command said Iraqi F-16s had “carried out several strikes inside Syrian territory based on intelligence gleaned by our intelligence services”.

The strikes, the statement read, “targeted an arms depot in the Al-Bukmal district, where a number of terrorists had been holed up”.

According to the same statement, warplanes also struck a Daesh-held structure in Deir ez-Zour’s Al-Bagouz district.

"The two targets were completely destroyed and our aircraft returned safely to their bases," the statement read.

Daesh has recently registered limited gains in Syria following fierce clashes with the PYD/PKK terrorist group.

This has prompted Baghdad to beef up its forces along the Syrian border to prevent Daesh terrorists from infiltrating into Iraqi territory.
