Ireland calls southern Ukraine dam attack 'war crime'

'Ireland working with EU, international partners to ensure those responsible are held to account,' says Foreign Minister Micheal Martin

LONDON (AA) - Ireland on Tuesday expressed concern over the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine, saying "the intentional targeting of civilian objects, including critical infrastructure, is a war crime."

"Ireland is working with EU and international partners to ensure those responsible are held to account," Foreign Minister Micheal Martin said on Twitter.

"We will continue to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes," he added.

The Kakhovka dam along the Dnieper River in southern Ukraine was breached on Tuesday, flooding swaths of territory.

Both Moscow and Kyiv accused each other of destroying the dam, which supplied water to Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and Crimea that was annexed by Russia in 2014.

This was the worst damage done to key infrastructure since the beginning of the Ukraine war over 15 months ago, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
