Israel says won’t cooperate with US probe into journalist’s death

Israel said Shireen Abu Akleh likely killed by 'wrong' gunfire from Israeli soldier

JERUSALEM (AA) – Israel has termed a US investigation into the death of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh as a “mistake,” saying it will not cooperate with the inquiry.

Israel "will not cooperate with an external investigation, and will not enable intervention to internal investigations," outgoing Defense Minister Benny Gantz said on Twitter.

He termed a move by the US Department of Justice to open an investigation into the killing of the Palestinian-American reporter as a “mistake”.

"We will not allow interference in Israel's internal affairs," he added.

Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth said the US move reflects lack of trust in the Israeli army’s investigation into the reporter’s death.

In May, 57 US lawmakers signed a letter demanding the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate Abu Akleh’s death.

Abu Akleh, 51, was killed on May 11, and the Palestinian Health Ministry said she was shot in the head while covering an Israeli military raid in the West Bank city of Jenin.

Several leading media agencies, including Al Jazeera, CNN, Associated Press, Washington Post, and the New York Times, conducted their own investigations, which all came to an end that Abu Akleh was killed by an Israeli bullet.

In September, the Israeli army said Abu Akleh was likely killed by "wrong" gunfire from an Israeli soldier.
