Israel Supreme Court rules to let in US student
Israeli court overturns previous verdict against Lara Alqasem, who was barred for supporting BDS movement
By Mustafa Deveci
JERUSALEM (AA) - Israel's Supreme Court on Thursday ruled in favor of an American student barred by Israel from entering the country over claims she supported a boycott movement.
Lara Alqasem, 22, got her visa for graduate studies in Israel but was denied entry by Israeli authorities for supposedly supporting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
The BDS is a global campaign devoted to pressuring Israel -- economically and politically -- to end its ongoing violations of international law.
Israeli officials argued that Alqasem, who planned to join the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, supports the BDS and took part in campaigns boycotting Israel.
It is unclear when the Israeli police will release Alqasem, who has been held at David Ben-Gurion Airport.
