Israeli army opens fire on vehicle in southern Lebanon, wounding driver

Lebanese authorities report over 1,100 Israeli violations of ceasefire since November

By Ahmed Asmar

ANKARA (AA) - A Lebanese citizen on Friday evening was injured by gunfire from the Israeli army targeting his vehicle in the Marjayoun district of southern Lebanon, marking another violation of the ceasefire agreement.

The Lebanese state news agency NNA reported that the Israeli "forces opened fire a short while ago on a civilian's vehicle while it was traveling on the internal road between the towns of Kfarkela and Odaisseh, resulting in his injury."

It added that the citizen was transferred to the hospital for treatment.

A fragile ceasefire has been in place in Lebanon since November, ending months of cross-border warfare between Israel and the Lebanese resistance group, Hezbollah, that escalated into a full-scale conflict in September.

Lebanese authorities reported over 1,100 Israeli violations of the ceasefire, including the deaths of at least 85 victims and injuries to more than 280.

Under the ceasefire deal, Israel was supposed to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon by Jan. 26, but the deadline was extended to Feb. 18 after Israel refused to comply. It still maintains a military presence at five border outposts.
