Israeli soldier killed, 5 injured in fighting in northern Gaza, army says

JERUSALEM / ISTANBUL (AA) – An Israeli soldier was killed and five others were wounded in fighting in the northern Gaza Strip, the army said on Wednesday.

The Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, citing a military statement, said a soldier from the Armored Corps 82nd Battalion was killed when an anti-tank missile hit his tank in the Shejaiya neighborhood in Gaza City. Three other soldiers were wounded in the same attack.

Two more soldiers from the elite Egoz unit were also wounded when a rocket struck a building in Shejaiya, the daily said.

The Palestinian group Islamic Jihad earlier said that its fighters had attacked Israeli soldiers in eastern Shejaiya on Wednesday.

According to military figures, at least 881 Israeli soldiers have been killed and 6,032 others injured in Gaza since October 2023.

Despite international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, killing more than 57,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, since October 2023.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
