Italy's Berlusconi leaves intensive care unit but still in hospital: Report

Former prime minister was in ICU with respiratory problems since April 5

ROME (AA) - Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been discharged from an intensive care unit (ICU) but remains hospitalized, local media reported Sunday.

Berlusconi, 86, was hospitalized in the ICU at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan on April 5 with a lung infection. He received treatment and was transferred to a regular ward on Wednesday, the Italian news agency Adnkronos reported.

Later, doctors at the hospital said the leader of the Forza Italia party has been suffering "for some time" from a chronic form of leukemia.

Berlusconi had several health problems in the past few years, including a heart attack that his doctor said could have killed him in 2016 and emergency bowel surgery in 2019.

In 2020, he also suffered some complications linked to COVID-19, which he said was "the worst experience" in his life.

He was also hospitalized in March and discharged after four days.

Berlusconi served as prime minister of Italy in three governments from 1994 to 1995, 2001 to 2006 and 2008 to 2011.
