ISTANBUL (AA) - Japan on Monday continued the evacuation of residents living on the southwestern Tokara Island chain amid recurring earthquakes, with weather authorities warning of stronger tremors.
The evacuation of local residents came as the island chain continued to be struck by earthquakes since late June, NHK reported.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said Akusekijima islet was shaken by a magnitude 5.1 quake early morning, following the intensifying seismic activity in the area since late June.
Since June 21, the region has been shaken by more than 1,500 tremors.
Despite recurring tremors, no tsunami warning has been issued in the region.
According to meteorological records, the region was hit by many tremors in 2021 and 2023.
