Japan unveils artificial intelligence rules for students

Education Ministry warns against cheating by using high tech, misuse of personal data

By Riyaz ul Khaliq

ISTANBUL (AA) - Japan on Tuesday unveiled guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence by students. However, it warned of the misuse of high tech by the students.

The guidelines, released by the Education Ministry, “called for particular caution regarding (AI) use by elementary school students, while stating that passing off AI-assisted school work as one’s own will be deemed cheating.”

New rules, though provisional, allow for the limited use of AI, including ChatGPT, by students up to high schools.

Japan is also planning later this year trials of AI use in a select group of schools to “revise the guidelines based on the results.”

The new guidelines also warn against misuse of personal data and copyright infringements which “could stifle students’ creativity and motivation to learn.”

While the ministry has suggested that AI should “be used to gain additional viewpoints for class discussions,” some ruling parties in Japan have expressed caution about allowing young people to access AI.
