Japan's court convicts 2 Americans in ex-Nissan chief flee case

Duo sentenced to prison for helping former Nissan chief-turned-fugitive Carlos Ghosn escape from Japan

ANKARA (AA) - A Japanese court on Monday convicted two Americans for helping former Nissan chief-turned-fugitive Carlos Ghosn escape from Japan in 2019, local media said.

The Tokyo District Court sentenced Michael Taylor, a 60-year-old former Green Beret, to two years in prison, and his son Peter, 28, to one year and eight months in prison, according to Kyodo News Agency.

The two American nationals had pleaded guilty and apologized for their roles in Ghosn's escape.

Last year, US authorities arrested the duo after Japan sought their extradition for helping Ghosn duck financial misconduct charges he was facing in Japan.

In November 2019, Ghosn was arrested in Japan on charges of corruption during his tenure as chairman of Nissan. Later in December 2019, Ghosn managed to flee to Lebanon.
