Jordan court sentences 11 to jail for 2016 Karak attack

AMMAN (AA) – A Jordanian court on Tuesday slapped 11 people with jail terms after convicting them of involvement in a 2016 terrorist attack in the city of Karak, capital of Jordan’s western Karak province.

Two of them were sentenced to life behind bars while the rest received jail terms ranging from three to 15 years each.

The 11 defendants, including one who was tried in absentia, were convicted earlier for committing “terrorist acts”.

Tuesday’s sentences remain subject to appeal before an appellate court.

On Dec. 18, 2016, 12 security personnel, two passersby and a Canadian tourist were killed in the shooting attack, which occurred near Karak’s historical citadel.
