Jordan says it will not be ‘battleground’ in any regional conflict amid US-Iran tension

Jordan will not be launchpad for any military action against Iran, Jordanian foreign minister tells his Iranian counterpart

By Serdar Dincel

ISTANBUL (AA) – Jordan will not be a “battleground” in any regional conflict or a launchpad for any military action against Iran, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi told his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on Monday.

Safadi’s remarks came over a phone call during which the ministers discussed bilateral and regional issues, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry said on US social media company X.

Safadi said Amman will not allow any party to violate Jordan's airspace or threaten its security and the safety of its citizens, “and will confront with all its capabilities any attempt to breach its airspace.”

He reiterated Amman's rejection of violating the sovereignty of states and highlighted the need to respect international law, according to the statement.

The top diplomats also discussed developments related to Iran’s nuclear program, with Safadi calling for diplomacy and dialogue as a path to resolving the issue.

The foreign minister expressed Jordan’s support for all efforts aimed at de-escalation, ending tensions and achieving calm in the region.

Araghchi, for his part, praised Jordan’s positions and its efforts to achieve security and stability in the region, according to the statement.

The ministers also agreed to continue communication and consultation pertaining to regional developments and ongoing diplomatic efforts to end tensions and activate dialogue.

The contact comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the US, with the American military fleet reportedly heading toward the region, as announced by President Donald Trump.

Trump confirmed that a large US “armada” was en route to the region, warning Iran to enter negotiations over its nuclear program or face potential military action.

In recent days, there has been intense diplomatic activity, with several regional countries – including Turkiye – intervening to ease tensions between the two nations.
