Jordan to resume flights to Syria from Oct. 3

Flights between Jordan and Syria suspended in 2012

AMMAN, Jordan (AA) – Jordan announced Tuesday that it would resume flights to Syria as of Oct. 3 following an agreement with Damascus.

"As of Oct. 3, the Royal Jordanian (Airlines) will resume its flights to transport passengers between Amman and Damascus,” a statement by the office of Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Al Khasawneh said.

The statement said the two sides will also discuss the necessary measures to restore the work of the joint Jordanian-Syrian free zone.

Flights between Jordan and Syria were suspended in 2012 following the outbreak of the Syrian civil war.

On Monday, Jordan announced the re-opening of the Jaber border crossing with Syria as of Sept. 29, after a suspension of almost two months due to military escalations in the southwestern Daraa province.

The two countries have also held ministerial meetings aimed at discussing ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in the fields of trade, transport, electricity, agriculture and water resources.

Earlier this month, the energy and oil ministers of Jordan, Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon agreed on a road map to supply Beirut with Egyptian gas via Syria to resolve a chronic energy crisis gripping the country.
