Judge blocks parts of Trump’s election executive order

District judge grants preliminary injunction to stop proof-of-citizenship requirement on federal voter registration form

WASHINGTON (AA) - A US federal judge blocked part of President Donald Trump's executive order Thursday that seeks to overhaul elections.

Arguing that the US "fails to enforce basic and necessary election protections" that exist in other countries, Trump signed an executive order last month that requires voters to present proof of citizenship when they register to vote.

"Our Constitution entrusts Congress and the States—not the President—with the authority to regulate federal elections," District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly wrote in a 120-page opinion.

She granted a preliminary injunction to stop the citizenship requirement from moving forward while the lawsuit plays out.

Kollar-Kotelly also blocked part of the order which requires public assistance enrollees to have their citizenship assessed before getting access to the federal voter registration form.

She declined, however, to block parts of the order that tightens mail-in ballot deadlines.
