Justice Department sues New York City over sanctuary city policies
'The Department of Justice is suing New York City and Mayor Eric Adams for continuing to obstruct law enforcement with sanctuary city policies,' says Pam Bondi
By Michael Hernandez
WASHINGTON (AA) - US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Thursday that the Justice Department is suing New York City, Mayor Eric Adams and other city officials for so-called "sanctuary city" laws.
"The Department of Justice is suing New York City and Mayor Eric Adams for continuing to obstruct law enforcement with sanctuary city policies. If New York’s leaders won’t step up to protect their citizens, we will," Bondi wrote on X.
The case, filed in the Eastern District of New York, follows another brought by the Trump administration against New York state in February after President Donald Trump assumed office. In both cases, the administration is seeking to challenge the constitutionality of state and local policies that it claims undermine federal immigration authorities.
The new complaint alleges that several provisions in New York City law and New York Police Department policies "constitute and create obstacles to the enforcement of federal immigration law."
