Kashmiri girl students protest veil ban

School principal denies ordering ban, saying students only asked to wear specified uniform

By Nusrat Sidiq

SRINAGAR, Jammu and Kashmir (AA) - A group of students in Indian-administered Kashmir staged a protest on Thursday after they were barred from entering a school premises for wearing a veil.

Several students from Vishwa Bharti Higher Secondary School in the capital Srinagar claimed that under an order from the principal to “keep the veiled students out,” school authorities did not allow them to attend their classes.

One of the protestors told Anadolu that the principal had ordered school authorities to ask hijabi/veiled students to remove their veils.

“Should we come here wearing revealing clothing like jeans, skirts, or other stuff?” the student said.

However, the school’s principal, Meem Rose Shafi, denied giving such an order. She said they have never stopped students from wearing the hijab or veils.

“We have only asked students to follow a specified uniform,” she said.

She added, however, that many students wear different colored veils and do not follow a proper uniform pattern.

“We are not going to allow that,” she said.

Last year in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, a junior college began enforcing a hijab ban, denying Muslim students entry. The college claimed that the hijab violated the college’s uniform policy. From there, the ban started spreading to other colleges and institutions, making it difficult for Muslim students to continue their education.
