Kazakh president appoints new energy minister
Yerlan Akkenzhenov replaces Almassadam Satkaliyev, now head of country's newly established atomic energy agency

ISTANBUL - Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree on Wednesday appointing Yerlan Akkenzhenov as the country’s new energy minister.
The decree, published on the Kazakh presidential press service Akorda’s website, officially names Akkenzhenov as the head of the Energy Ministry, filling the position vacated a day earlier.
On Tuesday, Tokayev issued a separate decree establishing an agency for atomic energy, as Kazakhstan moves forward with plans to build its first nuclear power plant following a referendum in October last year.
Almassadam Satkaliyev, who had served as the energy minister since April 2023, was appointed as the head of the newly created agency.
Before assuming his new role, Akkenzhenov had been serving as Kazakhstan’s vice minister of energy since June 2023.
