Kremlin says new US foreign policy configuration ‘largely’ coincides with Russia’s vision

Path toward restoring Russia-US ties can be taken ‘quite quickly, successfully’ if presidents of both countries maintain political will, says Kremlin spokesman

ISTANBUL (AA) - The Kremlin on Sunday said the new foreign policy configuration of the current US administration under President Donald Trump “largely” coincides with Russia’s vision.

“The new (US) administration is rapidly changing all foreign policy configurations. This largely coincides with our vision,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with state TV channel Rossiya-1 recorded Wednesday, with its excerpt shared by journalist Pavel Zarubin on Telegram.

Recalling that both Russia and the US had the same vote for a UN General Assembly resolution on Ukraine late last month, Peskov described this as “truly unimaginable.”

On Feb. 24, the UN General Assembly adopted a draft resolution calling for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine, with Russia and the US voting against.

On efforts to restore Russia-US ties, Peskov said attempts are currently underway to improve all aspects of bilateral relations, but that there is a “long road ahead” due to the significant damage made to these ties under the previous US administration.

“But if the political will of the two leaders – President (Vladimir) Putin and President Trump – is maintained, then this road can be traveled quite quickly and successfully,” Peskov further said.

He also said the range of possible topics for cooperation between Moscow and Washington should be outlined now, but that they should not expect any quick results in this regard.

Peskov added that French President Emmanuel Macron has not yet taken any steps to communicate with Putin, referring to Macron’s remarks in a Saturday interview with French media, during which said he did not rule out such dialogue.
