Kuwaiti court annuls last year’s parliamentary elections, reinstates previous parliament

Constitutional Court cites discrepancies in decree dissolving previous parliament

KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait (AA) – Kuwait’s Constitutional Court on Sunday annulled last year’s parliamentary elections and reinstalled the previous parliament.

The opposition won a majority in the September 2021 polls after winning 28 seats in the 50-member assembly.

But the court ruled that the polls were null and void and that the previous assembly must be installed, according to the state news agency KUNA.

The verdict cited “discrepancies in the decree dissolving the National Assembly (parliament) in 2020.”

There was no comment yet from the Kuwaiti authorities on the verdict.

The 2020 parliament was dissolved by a decree from Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah amid a dispute between the government and the previous assembly.
