Kyrgyzstan opens deposit account to raise funds to help victims of earthquakes in Türkiye

Leaders, employees of Kyrgyz administration transferred 1-day salary as material assistance in connection with earthquakes, says presidency

ISTANBUL (AA) - Kyrgyzstan said on Tuesday that it has opened a single deposit account to raise funds to help the victims powerful earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye on Monday.

“Anyone wishing to assist in overcoming the consequences of a natural disaster can transfer funds to the details of this account,” a statement by the Kyrgyz presidency read.

The statement said a hotline of the Emergency Situations Ministry has also been opened for any enquiries.

“It should be noted that the leadership and employees of the Administration of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic transferred a one-day salary as material assistance in connection with the latest events in Türkiye,” the statement noted.

A day earlier, Kyrgyzstan also announced that 63 rescuers traveled to Türkiye to take part in search and rescue operations in the aftermath of the earthquakes.

According to a statement by the Kyrgyz Emergency Situations Ministry on Monday, “63 rescuers of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic went to Türkiye to carry out searches and to rescue people trapped under the rubble, as well as to clear the rubble.”

The statement noted that two trained dogs from the State Rescue Training Center under the Emergency Situations Ministry would also be involved in the search for victims under the rubble left by the earthquakes.

“The rescue team includes rescuers, medical workers, psychologists, and cynologists. It should be noted that humanitarian aid will also be sent to the Republic of Türkiye in the near future.”

On the same day, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov expressed his condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on behalf of the Kyrgyz people.

Early Monday morning, a 7.7 magnitude tremor struck the Pazarcik district of Türkiye's Kahramanmaras province, then about nine hours later, a 7.6 magnitude quake centered in the Elbistan district rocked the region, affecting several other provinces.​​​​​​​

More than 8,000 people have been rescued from the rubble of destroyed buildings so far, while over 53,000 search and rescue staff and support personnel are currently working in quake zones, according to latest official figures.​​​​​​​
