Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan sign multiple agreements to deepen bilateral cooperation

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov visits Dushanbe, months after both countries signed historic border deal ending long-standing dispute

ISTANBUL (AA) - Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on Tuesday signed 13 documents to deepen bilateral cooperation, as Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov visited the Tajik capital Dushanbe.

A statement by the Kyrgyz presidency said a ceremony for the signing and exchange of the documents was held following talks between Japarov and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon.

The deals signed at the ceremony notably include agreements on confidence-building measures, establishing a Kyrgyz-Tajik intergovernmental council, and a cooperation program between their foreign ministries for 2026-2027.

The two presidents later launched the Tojvaron-Karamyk checkpoint between the two countries via videoconference.

The nearly 1,000-kilometer (621-mile) Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border had been a recurring flashpoint for conflict between the two Central Asian neighbors.

However, the Kyrgyz and Tajik presidents signed a historic border agreement in March, resolving the longstanding dispute that had been a source of conflict in recent years.
