Libya, UK hold talks on stalled elections

Head of Libya’s Presidency Council meets British ambassador in Tripoli

By Walid Abdullah

TRIPOLI, Libya (AA) - Head of Libya’s Presidency Council Mohamed al-Menfi held talks on Sunday with British Ambassador Caroline Hurndall to discuss the stalled Libyan elections.

The discussions also dwelt on political developments in Libya and issues of common interest, al-Menfi’s office said in a statement.

According to the statement, al-Menfi underlined keenness to holding the elections and supporting efforts aimed at reaching a constitutional basis to ensure a clear path for conducting the polls.

Hurndall, for her part, reiterated her country’s support to efforts to achieve national reconciliation in Libya and hold elections based on a constitutional basis agreed by all parties.

Oil-rich Libya has remained in turmoil since 2011 when longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi was ousted after four decades in power.

The situation has worsened since March when East Libya-based Parliament appointed a new government led by former Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha, but the head of the Tripoli-based government, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, insists he will cede authority only to a government that comes through an "elected parliament," raising fears that Libya could slip back into a civil war.
