Libya’s Haftar, Greek foreign minister hold talks

Top Greek diplomat meets East Libya-based commander Haftar in Benghazi

By Rania Abu Shamala

ISTANBUL (AA) - East Libya-based military commander Khalifa Haftar held talks on Sunday with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis.

Haftar hosted the top Greek diplomat and his accompanying delegation in the eastern city of Benghazi.

In statements to the Greek public broadcaster ERT, Gerapetritis said he discussed with Haftar issues related to migration, maritime zones, as well as bilateral cooperation.

Gerapetritis’s visit to east Libya comes a few days after Haftar held talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in the coastal city of El-Alamein on Monday.

Libya remains divided between two rival administrations: one led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh in Tripoli, which controls the west of the country, and another appointed by the House of Representatives (parliament) in early 2022, led by Osama Hammad and based in Benghazi, which governs the east and much of the south.

The UN continues to mediate efforts to unify governance and hold national elections in the country.
