Lithuania stresses priority of having NATO forces permanently stationed on its soil

WARSAW (AA) - Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda made a bold statement Thursday, emphasizing his country's priority to have NATO forces permanently stationed on its territory.

Nauseda made the remarks during a visit to Berlin, Germany according to a statement by the Lithuanian Presidency and came amid increasing tensions in the region due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Nauseda said NATO is crucial for the security of member countries and the presence of Allied forces on Lithuanian soil would further enhance the nation's safety.

He further mentioned that his government is committed to creating favorable conditions for the deployment of a German brigade in 2026, as it would significantly boost Lithuania's defense capabilities.

The president also drew attention to the critical importance of regional air defenses and the Baltic Sea, highlighting the need to ensure the safety of vital areas.
