Move to be approved by parliament in extraordinary session, says president

ISTANBUL (AA) – In the wake of Russia's military intervention in Ukraine, Lithuania's president on Thursday declared a state of emergency pending approval by parliament.

"Today, I will sign a decree on introducing the state of emergency, which will be passed by the parliament in an extraordinary session," President Gitanas Nauseda said, according to public broadcaster LRT.

Nauseda called Russia's actions "unprovoked military aggression," stressing that they cannot “remain indifferent."

"Although there is no direct threat to stability in Lithuania, we have to assess the situation properly and act responsibly and with solidarity," he added.

Earlier on Thursday, Russian troops entered Ukraine and targeted various cities.

This came just three days after Moscow recognized two separatist-held enclaves in eastern Ukraine, drawing international condemnation and tough sanctions.

Lithuania, a former Soviet state, shares a border with Russia and Belarus, where Russia's military buildup continues.
