ISTANBUL (AA) – Malaysia and France on Friday pledged to deepen collaboration in defense, economy, and technological development through the signing of three key agreements, as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met French counterpart Francois Bayrou on his official visit to Paris.

Following an official welcome ceremony, the two leaders witnessed the exchange of important documents designed to bolster cooperation in priority sectors.

In a statement on X, Anwar called the meeting “a new chapter in Malaysia-France relations,” highlighting discussions on investments in aerospace, semiconductors, automotive, clean energy, defense, education, and vocational training.

“These agreements reflect our shared vision for sustainable growth, inclusive development, and deeper cooperation,” he said.

The deals include a memorandum of understanding between Malaysian rare earth firm Malaco and French company Carester, marking “a major achievement in Malaysia’s rare earth industry, aligned with the country's ESG commitments.”

Meanwhile, a letter of offer was presented to French defense firm Thales LAS, which will “enhance Malaysia’s airspace surveillance with two new long-range radars.”

A third agreement between Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and Business France aims to promote bilateral trade in aerospace, renewable energy, and the digital economy.

France is Malaysia’s fourth-largest trading partner in the EU. Anwar expressed confidence that “this relationship will continue to flourish in line with our shared aspirations for sustainable growth and a more inclusive future.”

Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and France were established in 1957. As of 2024, bilateral trade between the two countries reached approximately $3.63 billion.
