Mali withdraws from Francophone group, citing sovereignty concerns
Mali 2nd African nation in 2 days to withdraw from International Organization of La Francophonie hosted by France

BAMAKO, Mali (AA) - Mali announced Tuesday its immediate withdrawal from the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), accusing it of undermining its sovereignty.
The Foreign Ministry criticized OIF’s actions during Mali’s ongoing transition. “Instead of supporting Mali in achieving the legitimate aspirations of its people, the OIF has distinguished itself by selectively applying sanctions and showing disregard for our sovereignty.”
Mali is the second nation in two days to withdraw from the Francophone group that promotes the French language and culture after Niger bid it adieu. France hosts the OIF.
Both nations, along with Burkina Faso, are part of the Alliance of Sahel States -- a new group of Western African nations that withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States bloc.
The ministry argued that OIF’s stance “is incompatible with Mali’s constitutional principles, which prioritize state sovereignty and the defense of national interests.”
Invoking Article 10 of the OIF Charter, Mali formalized its exit, marking a significant break with an organization it helped establish.
Mali, a founding member of the Cultural and Technical Cooperation Agency, that became OIF, has “contributed significantly to its construction and strengthening” of the group, the ministry noted, emphasizing the country’s historical commitment to Francophonie values.
The decision reflects growing tensions between Mali and international bodies perceived as aligned with French interests.
Burkina Faso also expressed its intention to withdraw from the OIF.
