WASHINGTON (AA) - A man was critically injured Tuesday after being shoved into the path of an oncoming subway train in Manhattan, New York, police said.
The incident occurred around 1.30 p.m. (1830GMT) at the southbound No. 1 train platform at the 18th Street station in Chelsea. Video footage shows the victim, wearing an orange jacket, standing near the edge of the platform and looking at his cellphone when a man in a dark coat approaches from behind and forcefully pushes him onto the tracks.
Emergency responders stabilized the man at the scene before transporting him to Bellevue Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition, authorities said.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene but was apprehended by police and taken into custody for questioning.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority shut off power to the tracks for about an hour, causing service disruptions. Trains resumed running shortly before 4 p.m.
