Man strikes, injures multiple people with truck in New York City

He 'went on a rampage,' says New York City Councilmember who witnessed attack

By Darren Lyne

HOUSTON, US (AA) - A man driving a U-Haul truck in New York City went on a rampage Monday, striking several people in his path and sending at least four to the hospital.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) said the man driving the truck drove into people at three different locations in Brooklyn, jumping the sidewalk at one point to strike one of the victims, according to multiple news reports. Law enforcement said a man in his 30s was taken to Lutheran Hospital and was in critical condition from his injuries. Three other men driving mopeds were also struck and suffered minor injuries.

Officers said the driver of the truck fled the scene but was tracked down and taken into custody for questioning, reports said.

New York City Councilmember Justin Brannan said he witnessed the attack.

"A man driving a U-Haul went on a rampage in Bay Ridge," tweeted Brannan. "He was just apprehended in Sunset Park. Several people were hit and badly injured. We have no idea of motives at this time, but this wasn't an accident."

Brannan continued his account of the rampage in an interview with WABC-TV.

"The police approached this driver and tried to get him to pull over, and at that time, he said something to the effect of 'I want to die' and proceeded to start driving on the sidewalks in Bay Ridge," said Brannan.

The NYPD bomb squad was called in to search the truck and found nothing suspicious, according to police.

"I have been briefed on the developing situation in Brooklyn," New York Gov. Kathy Hochul tweeted and said her team is coordinating with New York State police and the NYPD "and are ready to provide any assistance needed as the investigation continues."

New York City Mayor Eric Adams was also briefed about the attack.

"While the suspect is in custody, the NYPD is still investigating," tweeted the NYC Mayor's Office. "There are no additional credible threats at this time."
