BERLIN (AA) - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for quick implementation of the Gaza ceasefire plan in a Sunday phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stressing that the plan provides the "best chance" to secure the release of hostages and bring peace to the region.
In the call, Chancellor Merz reaffirmed Germany's strong support for US President Donald Trump's Gaza ceasefire plan, and also reiterated that Berlin is ready to contribute to the implementation of the plan, a German government spokesman said in a statement.
"The Chancellor welcomed Israel's agreement to the plan. The announced withdrawal of Israeli forces in Gaza is a right step,” Stefan Kornelius said, referring to reports that the Netanyahu government also agreed to the initial withdrawal line outlined in Trump's ceasefire plan.
“Now, the talks in Egypt must bring a rapid agreement on an end to the fighting, the immediate release of the hostages, full humanitarian access to Gaza, and the disarmament of Hamas. The German government would continue its diplomatic efforts and remain in contact with the US and its partners in the Middle East,” he added.
