Mexican mayor, police arrested in murders of 10 civilians

Authorities say victims killed, burned in case related to trafficking

By Nancy Caouette

MEXICO CITY (AA) – A mayor and four local police officers were arrested for their alleged roles in the murders of 10 victims in the western state of Michoacan, authorities said Tuesday.

The bodies of the killed and burned victims were found Saturday in a charred pickup truck near a gas pipeline in Cuitzeo.

In an interview Tuesday with a local radio station, Michoacan Gov. Silvano Aureoles said the investigation has so far indicated that police from the town of Alvaro Obregon detained the victims and the mayor would have given instructions to local police.

Aureoles said the probes have so far shown the crime could be related to a rivalry about the sale of drugs in the territory.

State Attorney General Jose Martin Godoy initially announced the arrest late Monday during a press conference.

Alvaro Obregon Mayor Juan Carlos Arreygue, was present when the 10 civilians were detained and killed, according to witnesses.

"After being arrested, the 10 people were forced into a van under the order of the mayor," Godoy said, adding that police "took the bodies to a field in the town of Cuitzeo where they burned them".

Michoacan is one of the most violent states in Mexico. Its territory is highly disputed by drug cartels to control the production, transportation and the sales of drugs.

Since former Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched a war against drug cartels in 2007, police and soldiers who have been heavily deployed to ensure security have faced accusations of human right abuses and murders.

Mexican authorities have implicated local police and the mayor of Iguala in the abduction and murders of 43 students in the southern state of Guerrero in September 2014. The students are still currently missing.

In June 2014, seven soldiers were detained for their alleged roles in the murder of 12 civilians in Tlatlaya in Mexico state.

The soldiers, who were charged with breach of discipline and disobeying orders, have all been released.
