ANKARA (AA) - A criminal network involved in the smuggling of migrants and facilitation of irregular migration has been dismantled by the Polish border guard, European police agency Europol said on Friday.

As a result of an operation, conducted on Nov. 18 with the supervision of regional prosecutor’s office and supported by Europol, 17 suspected members of an organized crime group were arrested, a Europol statement said.

Four of the suspects, believed to be the main organizers of the crime group, had facilitated since 2012 the illegal border crossing of people from eastern Europe, Asia and Africa mainly to Poland and other EU countries as well as the U.S.

The electronic devices and documents of the companies used to facilitate the illegal immigration were also seized during the successful operation, it added.

"The criminal network collaborated with criminals from different countries, primarily Russia, Turkey and Ukraine, to facilitate the entry of the non-EU nationals to Poland with visas based on fake employment documentation."

The statement said that once reaching the EU, the migrants were able to "move freely and work illegally" in other EU countries, mainly Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden.

The Europol also highlighted that the criminal network has aided the illegal border crossing of at least 13,019 non-EU citizens, while earning over €2.3 million (around $2.5 million) from the illegal activity.

Headquartered in The Hague, the Europol supports the EU member states in the fight against terrorism, cybercrime and other serious and organized forms of crime, according to its' website.
