Miracle rescues continue as teams race against time in quakes-hit regions in Türkiye

Rescue operations ongoing more than 140 hours after disaster strikes southern Türkiye

ANKARA (AA) - More survivors were pulled from the rubble of collapsed buildings late Saturday as rescue teams from around the world race against time to save lives in the wake of powerful earthquakes in southern Türkiye.

A 7-month-old baby was rescued in the Antakya district of Hatay province, 140 hours after the quakes struck the region.

Another miracle came when teams pulled a pregnant woman and her brother from the rubble in Hatay on Saturday.

Mohammed Habip, 26, was rescued from the debris of an 11-story building after Monday’s quakes in the Onikisubat district of Kahramanmaras province.

Fatma Oyel was pulled from a collapsed building in the Antakya district of Hatay --138 hours after the quakes.

Thirteen-year-old Esma Sultan emerged in Gaziantep after being trapped for more than 133 hours.

Many of the dramatic rescues were shown live on television.

The 7.7- and 7.6-magnitude earthquakes, centered in Kahramanmaras, affected more than 13 million people across 10 provinces, also including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and Sanliurfa.

Several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon, felt the strong tremors that struck Türkiye in the space of less than 10 hours.
