Missile from Yemen falls short of Israel: Reports

Rocket explodes above Saudi Arabia, prompting questions about US interception, according to Israeli media

JERUSALEM (AA) - A missile fired from Yemen fell far from the Israeli border, media reports said Tuesday, as officials investigate if the US intercepted the projectile.

Israeli Army Radio said the missile “was launched from Yemen targeting Israel but fell short before reaching its borders.”

It noted that it was the fifth missile fired from Yemen that failed to reach Israeli territory since fighting resumed in the Gaza Strip on March 18.

Israel’s public broadcaster KAN confirmed the rocket “exploded in the skies over Saudi Arabia and landed on its soil.”

Channel 14 reported that authorities are verifying if US forces downed the missile, though no confirmation has emerged.

The missile “was brought down over Saudi territory,” according to the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, but it did not specify the cause of the downing.

There has been no comment from the Israeli army as of yet.

Tensions flared after Israel violated a recent ceasefire with Hamas and resumed a military campaign in Gaza, prompting the Yemeni Houthi group to announce a resumption of operations targeting Israel and its interests.

Israel began a surprise aerial campaign on Gaza on March 18 and has killed more than 1,000 victims and injured over 2,000, shattering a January ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas.

Nearly 50,400 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in Israel's military onslaught since October 2023, most of them women and children.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
