Monsoon rains kill 48 in India’s north

Country’s meteorological department predicts more rains in several districts

NEW DELHI (AA) - At least 48 people have been killed in rains-related incidents in Indian northern state of Uttar Pradesh over the past two days, officials said on Saturday.

According to the State Relief Commissioner's office, deaths have been reported from various districts of the state.

"So far, we have confirmation of 48 deaths. The deaths have occurred in rain-related incidents, including building collapse," T.P. Gupta, an official at the State’s Relief Commissioner Office in Lucknow, told Anadolu Agency over phone.

Gupta said that many people are reported to be injured as well.

Yogi Adityanath, the state's Chief Minister, has directed officials to launch relief and rescue work on war footing.

The country’s meteorological department has predicted more monsoon rains in several districts of the state.

ANI, a local news agency, reported that the water level in Yamuna river in Indian Capital New Delhi crossed the danger mark and is now overflowing.

At least 43 boats were deployed for rescue and relief operations, it said.
