Most Canadians back recognition of Palestinian state: Survey

At least 65% of respondents support Mark Carney government's move last month to officially recognize Palestinian statehood

HAMILTON, Canada (AA) - A new survey found that a majority of Canadians support the country's decision to recognize the state of Palestine, despite some concerns that it could strain trade relations with the US, according to a report released on Monday.

The survey, conducted by Nanos Research for The Globe and Mail and CTV, found that at least 65% support or somewhat support Ottawa's recent decision to recognize Palestine officially. About one in every five people opposed the move, with 11% undecided.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the recognition ahead of the UN General Assembly, saying Canada was acknowledging the "State of Palestine, led by the Palestinian Authority." He defended the step during his speech at the UN, warning that hopes for a negotiated peace were being "steadily and gravely eroded."

The timing of the announcement placed Ottawa at odds with US President Donald Trump, who cautioned that recognizing Palestine could complicate ongoing trade negotiations.

According to the poll, 57% of Canadians believe the move will negatively affect Canada's trade ties with Washington.

Pollster Nik Nanos told the Globe and Mail that the results reflect Canadians' sympathy for Palestinians but also their pragmatism.

"While Canadians appear supportive of the recognition, they also expect friction with the US administration," he said.

The nationwide poll of 1,052 respondents was conducted between Sept. 29 and Oct. 1, with a margin of error of three percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
