Patients mostly from New York City area, 51 years or older, says Andrew Cuomo

WASHINGTON (AA) - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo gave a closer look at where new coronavirus patients are coming from Wednesday, as cases in the US state topped 320,000.

Speaking at his daily press briefing, Cuomo said the state reported 600 news cases "that walked in the door" Tuesday despite all virus measures.

He said authorities asked hospitals to track patients for the past few days. "Where are those new cases still coming from and what can we learn from those people to further target and refine our strategy?" asked the governor.

According to data he revealed, among more than 1,000 patients, 66% of new hospitalizations were among those coming from home, followed by nursing homes with 18%.

"Less than 1% came from jail or prison. 2% came from the homeless population. 2% from other congregate facilities. But 66% of the people were at home, which is shocking to all of us," he told reporters.

The governor said most patients are from the New York City area and 51 years old or older.

As of Wednesday, the state reported 321,192 confirmed cases and 25,100 deaths, according to a running tally by Johns Hopkins University. In all, the US has nearly 72,000 deaths and more than 1.2 million cases.
