New parliamentary system will 'end corruption, poverty, bans' in Turkiye: Opposition party

'Strengthened Parliamentary System' will empower us to stop injustices, says leader of Good (IYI) Party

ANKARA (AA) – Under the ‘Strengthened Parliamentary System,’ the Good (IYI) Party will end corruption, poverty and bans in Turkiye, the leader of the Turkish opposition party said on Wednesday.

The new system will empower us to put a stop to injustices and unlawful actions, Meral Aksener told the Good (IYI) Party’s parliamentary group.

“We will work hand in hand and shoulder to shoulder with the Turkish nation to build this new parliamentary system,” she said.

Her statement came after leaders of six opposition parties met in the capital Ankara last Saturday to discuss the ‘Strengthened Parliamentary System.’

The meeting was called by Kemal Kilicdaroglu, head of the main Turkish opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).

Along with Aksener, Felicity Party (Saadet) leader Temel Karamollaoglu, Democrat Party (DP) chief Gultekin Uysal, Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA) leader Ali Babacan, and Future Party (Gelecek) head Ahmet Davutoglu attended the meeting.

A statement issued after the discussions said the parties will unveil the new system on Feb. 28.

Aksener asserted that the IYI Party will come to power in the first election under the new system.

“We are ready with our vision, our projects, our qualified staff,” she said.

Turkiye adopted its current presidential system of government in 2017 through a public referendum and put it into practice a year later.

The country’s next elections will be held in 2023.
