ANKARA (AA) – With the publication of a landmark volume, Mexico and Turkiye on Tuesday took another step to promote bilateral cultural and social ties.

Speaking at an event held in the Turkish capital Ankara to present the first Turkish edition of the book A New Compact History of Mexico, Mexican Ambassador to Turkiye Jose Luis Martinez y Hernandez said the book gives the Turkish public an opportunity to learn more about the history of Mexico.

As such, he said, it will strengthen the cultural and social bonds between the countries.

Hernandez also expressed hope that the book would promote greater collaboration between Turkish and Mexican academic institutions on historical issues.

Also speaking at the event, Levent Gumrukcu, the top Turkish Foreign Ministry diplomat for American affairs, underlined that the Turkish and Mexican people already share many cultural and social similarities.

What is more, Turkiye sees Mexico as the key player in Latin America and a strategic partner in the world, he added.

Necdet Unlu, the rector of Ankara University, which played an important role in translating the volume into Turkish, said it would help further strengthen relations between Turkiye and Mexico.

First published in 1973, A Compact History of Mexico was created with the aim of providing the minimum dose of historical knowledge required by any Mexican of that time. When first published, the book was seen as reflecting the most synthetic and accurate vision of Mexico’s past.
